Four individuals tragically lost their lives following a tragic incident where a tourist boat capsized at a resort. Disturbing footage captured the moment the vessel sank, causing panic among passengers. The boat initially tilted to one side before abruptly overturning, throwing passengers, none of whom were wearing life jackets, into the water.
In a heart-wrenching scene, one man was observed desperately trying to climb onto the overturned hull as the boat fully capsized. This unfortunate event unfolded in Chuxiong, located in China’s Yunnan Province, on Tuesday, February 17, coinciding with Lunar New Year celebrations.
The boat capsizing resulted in 26 people being thrown into the water, prompting a swift emergency response. By 8:30 pm that same day, two fatalities were confirmed, with two others hospitalized for treatment. The death toll eventually climbed to four, with the victims reportedly succumbing to drowning.
The identities of the deceased have not been made public, and the status of the 22 survivors remains undisclosed. The cause of the tragic accident is currently under investigation. The resort, known as Lianxiwan Wetland Park, opened its doors in June 2025 and had attracted around 150,000 visitors by November of that year, offering various family-friendly activities.
In a separate incident, at least eight individuals perished in an explosion at a fireworks shop in eastern China. The explosion, triggered by improper fireworks handling near the shop in Jiangsu province, led to the tragic deaths. Following this incident, the Ministry of Emergency Management has urged enhanced supervision over fireworks production, transportation, sales, and usage to prevent future tragedies.
Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year, begins with the second new moon after winter solstice, typically falling between late January and late February annually. The upcoming year of the Fire Horse is set to commence on February 17, 2026. The festive 15-day celebration, originating from legends of warding off the Nian monster, features vibrant red decorations, fireworks, family gatherings, and the custom of giving red envelopes containing money, starting on the first new moon of the lunar calendar.
