A tragic incident unfolded as a 21-year-old university student, Lauryn Akey, lost her life in a car crash caused by an alleged drunk driver, Dennis Olson. Akey sent a poignant text message to her family expressing her love and anticipation of returning home soon after attending a friend’s wedding in Florida.
The fatal collision occurred on May 17 when Olson, under the influence, drove his F-150 truck into Akey’s vehicle on Interstate 75. The impact of the crash ejected Akey from her car, resulting in her immediate death at the scene. Olson, with a significantly high blood alcohol level, has been charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
Prior to the fatal accident, Olson had also been involved in another collision where he injured a woman and two children. Olson has a history of impaired driving, having previously faced charges in Minnesota for similar offenses. Despite the charges against him, Olson claims to have no memory of the crash.
Akey’s family and loved ones are devastated by the loss of a promising young woman with aspirations of becoming a nurse. Her boyfriend, Garrett Day, paid tribute to her on social media, reminiscing about their shared moments. Olson is currently held without bail in Charlotte County, awaiting his court appearance on June 15.
