A grieving family has honored a man described as “kind and compassionate” following his tragic death after being pushed down a staircase at a nightclub in Birmingham.
Berhane Tsegay, aged 33, suffered severe head injuries when he was forcibly pushed down stairs at the Sebene Habesha club in Birmingham on September 26, 2025. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
In a heartfelt tribute, his family expressed the profound impact of his loss on them and the broader community, struggling to articulate the depth of their grief and ongoing pain.
Describing Berhane as a gentle and humble individual of strong moral character, the family highlighted his dedication to personal growth, hard work, and support for his loved ones. He was committed to acquiring new skills, particularly in construction and other trades, showcasing a strong work ethic and potential to positively contribute to society.
Footage from club CCTV captured Simon Gebrengus pushing Berhane down the stairs, resulting in the fatal head injury. Gebrengus, 44, was swiftly apprehended by West Midlands Police and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter, receiving a six-year prison sentence on May 5.
Another individual, Bibi Gilzgi, also admitted to manslaughter but denied murder charges. His trial is scheduled to commence early next year.
Berhane’s family emphasized his devout faith, noting his service as a Deacon in Eritrea and the United Kingdom, where he was esteemed for his commitment and character by peers, educators, and clergy.
Reflecting on Berhane’s promising future tragically cut short, the family mourned the loss of a beloved son, brother, and aspiring spiritual leader, whose presence brought warmth, joy, and assistance to those around him. His absence continues to be deeply felt, impacting daily activities and leaving an irreplaceable void in their lives and community.
Detective Sergeant Robert Moir commented on Gebrengus’s inconsistent initial statements, praising the family for their resilience throughout the investigation and legal proceedings. The officers’ dedication led to justice being served for Berhane’s untimely death.
