The body of a young woman described as “beautiful and talented” was found in her residence in Bolton a year after her passing, according to the Bolton Coroner’s Court. Charlotte Leader, 23, was discovered in her flat on Newbury Walk in Bolton, Greater Manchester, during a welfare check by the police on August 6.
Charlotte’s mother, Chantay Simm, mentioned that they had not been in contact with Charlotte since September 2021 and despite efforts to locate her, she remained elusive. Neighbors also confirmed that Charlotte rarely left her home.
Family members shared their fond memories of Charlotte on social media, highlighting her musical abilities with the guitar and keyboard, as well as her passion for art. They expressed their deep love for her and the void her absence has left.
During the court proceedings, Assistant Coroner Stephen Teasdale disclosed that Charlotte had struggled with mental health issues and had distanced herself from both family and mental health services. He noted that she had declined a mental health appointment in 2022 and had ceased contact with services thereafter. There was no evidence of illicit drugs in her residence, and her diaries did not indicate any substance abuse concerns.
Charlotte’s sister, Caroline Calow, revealed that Charlotte had a history of eating disorders, particularly bulimia, from a young age. Surprisingly, the flat where Charlotte was found was devoid of medication and appeared well-kept, contradicting the image of someone in distress.
Investigations at the scene revealed a significant number of letters behind the front door, along with food in the fridge with expiration dates in July 2024. Charlotte’s body was found under a duvet.
Detective Inspector Paul Quinn described the flat as minimally furnished and exceptionally clean. He emphasized that there was no indication that Charlotte had intended self-harm or engaged in any suspicious behavior. Boxes of a detox cleanser were also discovered.
DI Quinn mentioned that Charlotte’s only phone conversations were with ChatGPT, seeking help. The last message from Charlotte, dated July 30, 2024, expressed frustration over eating unwanted food. The subsequent bot response highlighted her conflicted relationship with food.
Dr. Andrew Coates, a pathologist at Royal Bolton Hospital, stated that examining Charlotte’s remains was challenging as she had mummified over the year, which he deemed a reasonable occurrence.
Concluding the inquiry, Mr. Teasdale issued an open verdict due to insufficient evidence to determine the cause of Charlotte’s death.
