Noelia Castillo Ramos has passed away through euthanasia after facing mental health challenges and becoming paralyzed following a traumatic gang rape incident.
The 25-year-old from Barcelona succumbed after the procedure she had requested was permitted to proceed. Her father had made efforts to oppose the euthanasia with the support of the Christian Lawyers group.
Christian Lawyers, the entity representing Noelia’s father, expressed deep sorrow over her demise and criticized the existing euthanasia laws for failing to safeguard vulnerable individuals. They called upon policymakers to enact reforms to prevent similar tragedies.
Noelia received three injections during the procedure, leading to deep sedation and cardiac arrest. Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, spent the night before the procedure with her at Sant Camil Hospital, where she eventually passed away.
Despite her father’s objections, the Catalan Guarantee and Evaluation Commission approved Noelia’s euthanasia plea. She had endured years of mental anguish and physical pain stemming from a gang rape incident and subsequent spinal injuries.
Noelia had openly shared her desire to end her suffering and had confronted her father’s attempts to hinder the procedure. She expressed a wish to be alone during her final moments and had endured neglect and abuse in her past, leading to severe psychological issues.
Assisted dying has been legal in Spain since 2021, and Noelia’s case has sparked discussions about the complexities of euthanasia laws and the importance of mental health support for individuals in distress.
