A tragic incident occurred as a climber, Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa, lost her life in a fatal fall of 2,000 feet while climbing a volcano in Chile to celebrate her 42nd birthday. Ingrid was part of a group attempting to conquer one of the largest and most active volcanoes in the region when the accident happened on May 17, around 3 pm.
Prior to her untimely demise, Ingrid had shared a birthday message on social media hinting at uncertainties about her climb up Llaima Volcano. Despite expressing hope for a wonderful day turning 42, she also mentioned a sense of uncertainty regarding the outcome.
A devoted mother of two and a school governor at Alexander Graham Bell School in Villarrica City, Ingrid successfully reached the summit with her companions. Unfortunately, tragedy struck during the descent when she slipped and fell from a height of approximately 2,000 feet while pausing to take photos.
Rescue efforts faced challenges due to severe weather conditions, hindering immediate access to the site of the accident. Although Ingrid’s passing was confirmed on Sunday evening, her body could only be recovered the following Monday morning.
A joint operation involving firefighters, law enforcement, volunteers, and representatives from the National Forest Corporation (Conaf) successfully retrieved Ingrid’s remains. Conaf’s director emphasized the importance of climbers registering with the authorities for safety protocols and alerted about the harsh weather conditions predicted for the week.
Described as a responsible and kind mother by the school spokesperson, Ingrid received an outpouring of condolences from the community, including her family, friends, and two children. Volcán Llaima, standing over 3,000 meters tall, is renowned for its challenging terrain and is a sought-after destination for experienced hikers.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ingrid’s fall are ongoing, as authorities work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the tragic incident.
