Coastguard responders have disclosed information about the urgent rescue effort to save a mother, child, and a brave stranger in a tragic incident near Withernsea.
A significant search and rescue mission was initiated on Friday to assist Sarah Keeling, 45, and her daughter Grace Keeling, 15, who were struggling in the waters off the East Yorkshire Coast. Sadly, Mark Ratcliffe also tried to aid them but lost his life in the process.
Hornsea Inshore Rescue and RNLI teams were deployed locally to locate the individuals. Despite HM Coastguard’s search on Saturday morning, the operation was halted by 4 pm that day, concluding the rescue efforts.
In an official statement, a spokesperson from Hornsea Inshore Rescue highlighted the challenging conditions faced by the rescuers. They later honored the memory of the three individuals who perished and expressed gratitude to the emergency services involved in the rescue mission.
“The decision to launch was delayed due to hazardous conditions with large breaking waves on the ramp,” rescuers explained in a statement posted on Facebook. “A team was dispatched to provide medical assistance in Withernsea.”
After assessing the risks, the rescue team managed to launch the boat amidst tough sea conditions. Collaborating with the RNLI, Coastguard, and other search and rescue assets, the crew conducted thorough searches before standing down.
Expressing condolences, the statement conveyed, “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragic incident, including the friends and families of Mark, Sarah, and Grace during this sorrowful time.”
The family of Mr. Ratcliffe also paid tribute to his heroic act, describing him as a selfless hero with a kind heart who sacrificed himself to save others. They mourned his loss and cherished the memories of their beloved family member.
