A family is mourning the loss of their 11-year-old son, Mason Neal, who tragically passed away on New Year’s Day. Mason, a resident of Staxigoe near Wick in Caithness, fell ill on January 1 and was quickly taken to Caithness General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, the young schoolboy succumbed to his condition later that same day. His mother, Lucy, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, describing Mason as a beloved, cheerful, and intelligent young boy.
Expressing her deep sorrow, Lucy wrote online, “The reality of losing Mason hasn’t fully hit me yet. Words cannot capture the devastation we feel. On January 1, 2026, we bid farewell to our dear son, Mason, as he peacefully closed his eyes for the last time.”
She continued, “While it feels surreal to be writing this, we are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received during this unimaginable time. I want to thank everyone for their kindness and assure you that I will respond to your messages when I can. For now, we are coming to terms with our loss. Hold your loved ones close, cherish every moment, and remember our dear Mason, who will forever be in our hearts. We miss you deeply, Mason. Rest in peace, our forever 11.”
The community in Staxigoe has rallied around Mason’s family, with an online fundraiser exceeding £11,000 to support Lucy and her eldest daughter, Phoebe. A GoFundMe page was set up by concerned members of the community to assist the grieving family in their time of need.
Authorities have confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mason’s passing. Police were alerted to the situation on the morning of January 1, 2026, when the boy fell ill in Staxigoe. He was swiftly transported to Caithness General Hospital, where he sadly passed away later that day. The family has been notified, and a formal report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal as part of the standard procedure.
