Tributes pour in for a 22-year-old man whose body was recovered from a river following an incident on the hottest June day on record. Brody Leach was discovered in the River Severn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, as confirmed by West Mercia Police, who maintained a significant presence at the location with sections cordoned off.
The young man, described as the “life and soul of the room,” reportedly entered the water during the recent heatwave and did not return. West Mercia Police announced plans to enhance monitoring along the river over the weekend.
A police spokesperson stated, “Brody has been formally identified by his family, and his next of kin have been notified. Our thoughts are with them, and we urge that their privacy be respected during this challenging period.”
Paying homage to Brody on Facebook, a friend expressed, “RIP Brody, your absence will be deeply felt. You always brought life and joy to every room you entered. Thank you for your humor and quirky remarks, making you a fantastic coworker and friend.”
Another individual wrote, “I am saddened by this news. I had the pleasure of teaching Brody a few years ago; he was a delightful young man who was well-liked by all. He had a distinct personality that will always be remembered. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew him.”
Brody’s passing marks the second casualty during this June’s heatwave, following the death of a 50-year-old man at Aberavon beach due to swimming complications. Authorities responded to the incident, but the man, from Cilfrew, Neath Port Talbot, succumbed at the scene, with his death deemed non-suspicious.
During the previous month’s heatwave, at least 15 individuals, predominantly children, drowned while swimming in open waters, prompting widespread alerts about the hazards associated with open water swimming, such as unexpected cold temperatures leading to cold water shock syndrome.
The recent June heatwave saw consecutive days setting new temperature records, with Friday identified by the Met Office as the UK’s hottest June day ever recorded, surpassing previous highs.
