A young woman who was a victim of gang rape and left paralyzed shared her heartbreaking final wishes before passing away today. Noelia Castillo Ramos, aged 25, endured two separate rape incidents, one involving her ex-boyfriend and the other with three males while residing in a state-run facility for vulnerable youth in 2022.
Following the traumatic events, she attempted suicide by jumping from a building, resulting in paralysis from the waist down and enduring chronic pain with no hope for recovery. Noelia, who had a troubled childhood due to her parents’ struggles with addiction and mental health issues, had a history of suicide attempts and self-harm.
Having battled mental health conditions like borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder since a young age, Noelia had sought assisted suicide 18 months earlier but was opposed by her father, who legally challenged her decision. Despite his efforts to prevent it, a specialized committee in Catalonia granted her euthanasia request in July 2024.
After a prolonged legal battle that reached Spain’s highest courts and the European Court of Human Rights, Noelia’s father’s attempts to halt the euthanasia procedure were unsuccessful. Ultimately, the euthanasia was carried out as planned, with three injections administered to induce deep sedation and cardiac arrest, resulting in her passing.
Noelia, who had openly discussed her desire to end her suffering, spent her last moments in a manner of her choosing, surrounded by close family members. Her mother, while not in favor of euthanasia, stood by her daughter’s decision until the end. Spain’s legalization of euthanasia in 2021 allowed individuals with incurable conditions to make end-of-life choices, despite opposition from conservative factions and religious institutions.
In a poignant display of resolve, Noelia expressed her wishes for a dignified departure, emphasizing her desire to appear beautiful and at peace in her final hours. The procedure, aimed at ensuring a painless passing, was carried out with only medical staff present in the room, fulfilling her long-standing wish for a peaceful end to her suffering.
