“Tragic Teen Drownings Spark Water Safety Warnings”

Experts are issuing stark warnings following the tragic deaths of five teenagers who drowned over the Bank Holiday weekend. The family of a 15-year-old boy, Declan Sawyer, who was found in Swanholme Lakes near Lincoln during the UK’s high-temperature spell, is urging caution around open water.

In Rotherham, South Yorkshire, another teenager went missing while swimming at a country park on Bank Holiday Monday, with authorities confirming the recovery of a body after a search. Tragedy also struck in Dublin, where 15-year-old Abbie Carmody-Pepper lost her life at Burrow Beach. Additionally, a teenage girl was found dead at Kingsbury Water Park in Sutton Coldfield, and a 13-year-old boy drowned in a reservoir in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Declan’s father, Carl, described him as a beloved young man with a vibrant personality, urging awareness of water dangers amid the ongoing heatwave. Authorities are emphasizing the risks of swimming in open water, highlighting the perils posed by rivers, lakes, and quarries. They warn of cold water shock and stress the importance of understanding water’s unpredictability to prevent drowning incidents.
