In Hythe, we arrived at dusk, greeted by a serene coral sky and elongated shadows. Despite being a popular staycation destination, the beach was relatively quiet, with only a few dog walkers, runners, and cyclists dotting the promenade.
The tranquil sea mirrored the sky, amplifying the crunch of pebbles underfoot as we skipped stones into the vast ocean. This picturesque spring evening along the sleepy south coast of England was truly idyllic.
Hythe, a historic market town on the outskirts of Romney Marsh in Kent, boasts notable landmarks. St. Leonard’s, a Norman church documented in the Domesday Book, houses an ossuary with a remarkable collection of ancient human skulls and bones for a nominal fee.
The town is also home to the Royal Military Canal, constructed as a defense measure against potential invasion by Napoleon between 1804 and 1809. Visitors can rent boats to explore this historic waterway.
After witnessing the sunset behind the fishing boats on the shoreline, we retreated to Blackbird Cottage in Ottinge, near Lyminge, our charming accommodation for the week. This quaint two-bedroom thatched barn conversion, reserved through Sykes Cottages, exudes a rustic charm with original features, stained glass windows, and oak beams set amidst picturesque gardens.
The following day, we ventured to Folkestone, a town that has undergone a remarkable transformation. The once bustling Harbour Arm, previously a ferry terminal, is now a trendy promenade lined with chic bars, cocktail lounges, and eateries housed in old railway carriages.
Visitors can enjoy live music against the backdrop of the sea, browse through a vibrant market, and savor a variety of culinary delights. The beachfront features The Pilot bar, offering a unique seating experience with fairground dodgem cars and a lively play area for children.
Margate, renowned for its retro vibe and artistic legacy, attracts attention for its association with renowned artist Tracy Emin. The Turner Contemporary art gallery pays homage to JMW Turner, a local artist, with captivating exhibitions, including Turner’s original oil painting capturing the dramatic Kent coast.
Explore the dynamic art scene, dine at local seafood eateries, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of these coastal towns to experience the quintessential essence of the English seaside.
