A man from Swindon, Wiltshire, named Christopher Trybus, is facing allegations of causing his wife’s death by engaging in extensive domestic abuse. The victim, Tarryn Baird, passed away in November 2017 due to hanging. Trybus, aged 43, is currently on trial at Winchester Crown Court, charged with manslaughter, controlling and coercive behavior, and two counts of rape.
The prosecution, represented by Tom Little KC, stated that Trybus subjected his wife to a series of abusive behaviors, including controlling actions, coercion, and sexual violence, which culminated in her tragic death. Conversely, the defense, led by Katy Thorne KC, argued that the accusations against Trybus are unfounded. Thorne claimed that Baird’s mental health issues led her to fabricate stories of abuse to seek attention and care.
Thorne emphasized that Trybus maintained a loving relationship with his wife and that their sexual activities, which included unconventional practices like bondage and rough sex, were consensual. She refuted claims of financial control and isolation, suggesting that Baird’s mental health struggles and a lack of adequate support were significant factors in her decision to take her own life.
The defense maintained that Trybus did not commit the alleged sexual assaults and highlighted inconsistencies in Baird’s claims of abuse. Thorne urged the jury to consider the possibility that Baird’s suicide was a cry for help that tragically went wrong, emphasizing that Trybus’s actions did not directly lead to her death.
As the trial continues, Trybus, a software consultant and developer, denies all charges against him.
