Tropical Storm Melissa is gaining strength over the weekend, raising concerns about its potential impact on Jamaica. Originating in the southern Caribbean Sea on October 21, Melissa is currently heading towards Jamaica, with experts warning of possible catastrophic consequences.
Renowned tropical cyclone analyst and hurricane historian, Michael Ferragamo, expressed on Twitter that Melissa’s trajectory could result in prolonged periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and storm surges, making it the most significant weather event for the island in years.
Comparing the situation to the infamous Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which brought devastating winds of 115 knots (130 mph) and caused extensive damage in Jamaica, Ferragamo suggested that Melissa could surpass Gilbert in intensity.
Hurricane Gilbert, one of the most powerful storms in the Atlantic basin’s history, wreaked havoc when it hit near Kingston with destructive winds. Despite the destruction, Jamaica managed a relatively low death toll compared to other affected regions.
The aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert significantly impacted Jamaica’s economy, causing losses in the banana industry and infrastructure damages amounting to billions of dollars. With the looming threat of Melissa approaching, officials in Jamaica are already taking precautionary measures and urging citizens to stay vigilant.
Christopher Tufton, Jamaica’s Minister of Health and Wellness, announced that public hospitals are preparing for emergencies by entering emergency mode and suspending non-essential medical services to accommodate potential storm-related injuries.
As the nation braces for the impending storm, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, ready to close airports upon issuance of hurricane warnings. Experts, such as Alex DaSilva from AccuWeather, are advising residents in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica to prepare for severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, flash floods, and power disruptions, as Melissa approaches.
Overall, the region is on high alert as Melissa continues to strengthen, with the potential for significant impacts on multiple countries.
