“Trump Agrees to Ceasefire with Iran Amid Diplomatic Talks”

Date:

In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump has withdrawn his threat to obliterate Iran and instead agreed to a temporary ceasefire lasting two weeks to facilitate ongoing negotiations.

This decision to pause airstrikes came after the Prime Minister of Pakistan made a public appeal for more time to engage in critical diplomatic talks with Iran.

Many view Pakistan’s involvement as a strategic move that provides an opportunity for President Trump to navigate out of a conflict where a clear exit strategy was lacking, especially as oil prices surged due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Prior to the 8pm deadline set by Trump for Iran to agree to a resolution, tensions escalated with the threat of total destruction of Iran’s civilization if a deal was not reached.

Reports indicate that Israel has also endorsed the ceasefire agreement. Subsequently, Iran confirmed that ships would be permitted passage through the Strait of Hormuz under the supervision of Iran’s military for the next two weeks.

During this temporary ceasefire, Iran is expected to have exclusive authority over the strategic waterway, a privilege not previously held, at least for the duration of the agreed-upon period.

A statement by Abbas Araghchi outlined the arrangement, stating that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be allowed for two weeks under the coordination of Iran’s Armed Forces and considering technical constraints.

Before the conflict, there were no hindrances to maritime traffic through the strait, with over 100 vessels traversing the area daily. It remains unclear if Iran intends to impose fees on passing ships as previously done.

In a message on Truth Social, Trump announced his acceptance of an extended deadline and a two-week ceasefire, citing Iran’s “10-point plan” as a viable basis for further negotiations.

The specifics of this plan, distinct from a previous proposal by Iran that Trump had deemed insufficient, are currently unclear.

Trump’s tendency to make bold declarations only to backtrack at the eleventh hour has been noted, with this latest retreat likely reinforcing that perception.

Expressing that the ceasefire is conditional on Iran ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the strait, Trump highlighted discussions with Pakistani officials as influential in his decision to halt military action against Iran.

He emphasized the importance of finalizing the 10-point plan during the designated two-week period.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan had appealed for a ceasefire extension to facilitate peace talks and urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as a goodwill gesture.
