President Donald Trump has commended Iran for a “gesture of goodwill” following the release of an American citizen who was detained for over 18 months. This recognition comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations.
The conflict between the US and Iran has been sporadic since February 28, when joint strikes by the US and Israel targeted key Iranian locations. In response, Iran launched attacks across the region and closed the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday, July 15, to announce, “Iran has permitted an American citizen, wrongfully detained in December 2024 under then-President Joe Biden, to depart the country. She is now out of Iran and in good health. The United States appreciates this act of goodwill by Iran.”
Despite Iran’s positive action, the US military conducted strikes against Iranian targets on Wednesday. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported hitting Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities to diminish Iran’s ability to threaten commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM confirmed the use of precision munitions in multiple locations, including Bandar Abbas, and detailed a 90-minute wave of strikes on Greater Tunb Island earlier that day.
Approximately a month ago, the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of ending the conflict within 60 days. However, efforts to establish lasting peace and restore international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have faltered.
Recently, Iran announced its complete withdrawal from the MoU due to alleged violations by the US. Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi emphasized Iran’s intent to assert full control over the Strait of Hormuz, even if it involves taking over Oman’s share of the waterway.
President Trump declared an end to the ceasefire during a NATO summit in Turkey last week, expressing disdain for further dealings with Iran. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum,” he stated to the press.
