President Donald Trump has declared that the United States will take action in the Strait of Hormuz by implementing a ‘blockade’ with the US military overseeing the shipping passage.
Following unsuccessful US-Iran discussions in Pakistan on Saturday amidst an uncertain ceasefire, tensions are escalating as the president announces the initiation of a US Navy blockade to control ship movements through the Strait of Hormuz, beginning shortly.
Trump hinted at the involvement of other countries in the blockade without specifying them, although the UK is reportedly not part of the operation.
A government spokesperson emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to support the global economy and everyday living expenses.
Efforts are underway to form a coalition with France and other allies to safeguard freedom of navigation in the region.
While progress was made during the negotiation meeting in Islamabad, particularly on non-nuclear issues, Trump remains firm on preventing Iran from acquiring or expanding its nuclear capabilities.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for 20% of the world’s oil trade, has been disrupted by Iran since the conflict erupted on February 28, leading to a surge in fuel prices worldwide.
Trump criticized Iran for failing to fulfill its promise to reopen the Strait, causing distress and economic disruptions globally.
The US Navy is set to enforce the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to allow all ships passage eventually, denouncing what Trump labeled as “world extortion.”
Despite ongoing tensions, some ships managed to navigate through the Strait over the weekend, including military vessels clearing sea mines laid by Iran.
Trump reiterated that ships paying an ‘illegal toll’ to Iran will not be granted safe passage, warning of US military action against Iranian vessels or any resistance encountered.
He emphasized the need to remove Iranian-laid mines in the Strait and issued a stern warning to Iran against any hostile actions.
Trump asserted Iran’s military losses in the conflict and vowed to take decisive measures, signaling readiness to conclude the situation in Iran’s favor.
