During his recent visit to China, former President Donald Trump revealed that he chose not to directly respond to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s query about the United States’ stance on defending Taiwan in the event of an attack by China.
When pressed by a reporter on this matter, Trump maintained his reluctance to disclose his position, stating that only he knows the answer. He emphasized his policy of not divulging such sensitive information, recounting Xi’s inquiry about defending Taiwan to which he replied, “I don’t discuss that.”
Following a series of meetings with Xi Jinping, including a state banquet and official discussions, Trump’s delegation departed from China. Both sides engaged in detailed discussions on various critical issues affecting their countries and the global landscape, leading to the establishment of new agreements.
The White House affirmed the positive outcome of the bilateral talks, underscoring mutual efforts to boost economic collaboration, facilitate market access for American enterprises in China, and encourage Chinese investments in U.S. industries. The leaders also addressed combating the influx of fentanyl precursors into the U.S. and enhancing Chinese purchases of American agricultural goods.
Regarding Iran, Trump underscored the shared perspective between the U.S. and China on the Iran conflict. He praised the resolution of diverse challenges through his discussions with Xi Jinping, emphasizing their alignment on Iran-related objectives and the importance of maintaining open shipping lanes.
While Taiwan was a topic of discussion, Chinese officials cautioned Trump about the implications of mishandling the Taiwan issue, stressing the potential risks to the overall bilateral relationship. Despite affirming the U.S.’s unchanged stance on Taiwan’s independence, the American position, as reiterated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, remains non-supportive of Taiwan’s quest for independence.
