Donald Trump has incited significant backlash by sharing a racist video on his social media platform depicting the Obamas as monkeys. The US President, aged 79, posted a video on his Truth Social account this morning, spreading debunked falsehoods about the 2020 Georgia election results, which he baselessly claimed were rigged against him. The video, originally from the ‘America First’ Patriot News Outlet, was uploaded to Trump’s account at 4:44 am as part of his ongoing personal campaign against American democracy, despite being re-elected by the same system.
In a one-minute clip, a brief two-second segment portrays the nation’s first Black President and his spouse as monkeys. The video, still present on his platform hours after its initial posting, has triggered widespread condemnation, with prominent figures denouncing Trump’s behavior. Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California and Democratic nominee hopeful, broke his usual pattern of banter with Trump to criticize the video seriously. He called on every Republican to denounce the President’s actions.
Dean Withers, an internet streamer, and Harry Sisson, a liberal influencer, also expressed strong disapproval of Trump’s actions, labeling them as racist and disgraceful. Criticism extended overseas, with British scientist Dr. Chigozie Udechukwu denouncing the video as a new low for Trump. DeSota Wilson, a business consultant, accused Trump of consistently targeting people of color to rally his supporters, particularly African Americans.
Despite the growing outrage, Trump has not commented on the video. A former Obama official, Ben Rhoades, condemned Trump as “a stain on our history.” The White House responded through Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, dismissing the video as a meme where Trump was also depicted as “king of the jungle.” Leavitt criticized those offended by the clip, dismissing their reactions as “fake outrage” and urging media to focus on more pertinent issues.
