“TUC Urges Government to Raise Youth Minimum Wage Amid Controversy”

Date:

The leader of the Trades Union Congress has criticized exaggerated warnings regarding increasing the youth minimum wage, highlighting that 85% of young individuals already earn more than the current rate. Paul Nowak dismissed claims of causing fear and confusion, emphasizing that most 18-20 year olds are paid above the youth minimum wage, with 63% receiving at least the adult national minimum wage.

The TUC has called on the Government to uphold its commitment to raising the youth wage despite opposition. Concerns about rising unemployment among 18 to 24-year-olds have escalated, hitting a five-year peak in the last quarter of 2025.

In contrast, the Tony Blair Institute cautioned the Labour Party against raising the minimum wage, suggesting it could discourage companies from hiring young workers. However, the TUC rebuffed these warnings, citing previous wage increases for young adults that did not negatively impact employment rates, according to the Low Pay Commission.

Recent reports indicate a potential delay by the Government in implementing equal pay for young workers. Labour has pledged to eliminate age-based wage discrepancies and ensure that 18 to 20-year-olds receive the same minimum wage as older workers.

Nowak emphasized the importance of fair wages for young individuals, emphasizing the need for practical solutions to address youth unemployment, such as enhanced employment rights and quality apprenticeship programs.

The TUC highlighted that several countries like France, Germany, and New Zealand do not have differential wage rates for adults aged 18 and above. In the UK, employers must pay workers aged 18-20 a minimum of £10 per hour, which will increase to £10.85 in April. Workers aged 21 and above must receive at least £12.21, rising to £12.71.

The Tony Blair Institute’s report expressed concerns about potential negative impacts of further wage increases on employment opportunities for younger workers. The Government reaffirmed its commitment to narrowing the wage gap between adult and youth workers to support young individuals in the workforce.
