Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in a recent episode of the acclaimed TV medical drama “The Pitt,” where the character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, expressed his intention to visit the landmark located in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Used by Indigenous people for millennia to guide bison herds over an 11-meter cliff for hunting, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is situated approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary. The site features an interpretive center integrated into the sandstone cliff, showcasing Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, leading visitors to a trail along the cliff top.
Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, reported an increase in visitor interest following the TV show mention, with some visitors attributing their curiosity to the episode. The site has seen a surge in social media and email engagement as a result. Crow Shoe expressed gratitude for the show’s publicity and anticipates a rise in visitor numbers and tours during the peak season from May to September.
In addition to the TV show mention, promotional efforts such as discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass have contributed positively to visitor numbers. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, including Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, encouraging visitors to explore the region comprehensively.
Travel Alberta, the provincial marketing agency, capitalized on the TV show’s popularity by releasing a promotional video featuring the show’s characters against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs. Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir shared the TV clip on social media, highlighting the global impact of Alberta’s history and cultural landmarks.
