“TV Star Honors LGBT Veterans With King at Memorial”

Date:

A star from the TV show “Traitors” expressed her appreciation for the King’s presence at the unveiling of the first memorial dedicated to LGBT armed forces veterans. Leanne Quigley, a former Army soldier and winner of Series 3 of a popular BBC reality show, described the day as powerful, marking 25 years since the ban on LGBT individuals serving in the military was lifted. She emphasized the relief and validation felt by many in attendance, highlighting the importance of recognition and visibility.

Leanne, aged 28, expressed her astonishment at the King’s attendance and conveyed her gratitude for his presence. She recounted meaningful conversations with veterans who had endured hardships after being discharged from the military. The event brought a sense of belonging and acknowledgment to many who previously may have felt marginalized.

This occasion marked the first time the King officially participated in an LGBT event. The ban on LGBT personnel serving openly persisted until 2000, causing numerous individuals in the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF to face discrimination, harassment, and even legal consequences due to their sexual orientation. The Mirror has long supported Fighting With Pride’s efforts to advocate for recognition, support, and compensation for LGBT veterans.

Over 100 current and former armed forces members gathered with the monarch to witness the dedication of the memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The sculpture, resembling an opened letter, symbolizes the personal letters used to discredit and harm serving personnel based on their sexuality. Brigadier Clare Phillips, speaking at the ceremony, shared her journey from secrecy and fear to pride and openness, emphasizing the importance of honoring past sacrifices and protecting progress for future generations.

Louise Sandher-Jones, the minister for Veterans and People, described the day as significant for LGBT veterans and encouraged those affected by the ban to come forward. Veterans discharged under the ban have the opportunity to seek financial restoration and access support schemes to address past injustices. Sandher-Jones urged all eligible individuals to take advantage of the available resources to reclaim their rights and recognition.

The event concluded with a message of inclusivity and support for diversity within the armed forces, emphasizing the strength that comes from embracing all individuals regardless of their background. The memorial serves as a permanent reminder to uphold progress and ensure a future marked by acceptance, unity, and unwavering support for all who serve their nation.
