A mother, initially informed of a potential miscarriage of her twins at only 22 weeks, shared the remarkable journey of her two babies, who were born weighing just slightly more than a block of butter each but are now thriving.
Jade Crane, 43, experienced distress when she suspected a leak in her amniotic fluid and rushed to the hospital, fearing the worst for her unborn children.
Following a decade of fertility treatments and numerous miscarriages, Jade had surpassed the critical 12-week mark, believing her pregnancy was progressing normally. However, at 22 weeks and five days, doctors delivered heartbreaking news.
Despite the grim prognosis, Jade felt her babies moving and the pregnancy had been trouble-free. Shortly after the devastating news, she went into labor, giving birth to daughter Harley, weighing 500g, and an hour later to twin brother Harry, weighing 520g.
Now four years old, the twins have defied the odds and are thriving. Jade, a former mental health nurse from Heanor, Derbyshire, described the twins as being as tiny as a Coke can and their hands resembling Barbie doll fingers due to their delicate size.
Reflecting on their miraculous journey, Jade recalled the twins’ early resemblance to a big block of butter and how they were the size of an elf on a shelf during Christmas. She marveled at their resilience, stating they had overcome numerous challenges, showcasing their inner strength.
Upon noticing the amniotic fluid leakage, Jade was taken to Nottingham City Hospital, where doctors initially aimed to prolong the pregnancy until the 24th week for medical intervention. Despite discussions about comfort care and potential short life spans, Jade expressed her desire for any possible assistance for her babies.
Harley was born prematurely at 22 weeks gestation, followed by Harry, who emerged within his amniotic sac. Both infants were immediately transferred to neonatal intensive care, where they fought for survival over the next five months, enduring various health complications.
Jade recalled the twins’ struggles with undeveloped lungs, heart issues, brain bleeds, and the necessity for eye and bowel surgeries. Despite these challenges, the twins exhibited extraordinary strength, with both eventually being weaned off oxygen within four months of their homecoming.
The twins now attend a specialized school, with Harley diagnosed with non-verbal autism and Harry with cerebral palsy. However, their conditions have not hindered their spirits, with Jade describing Harley as spirited and Harry as laid-back. Since their discharge from the hospital, the twins have not required readmission, leading Jade to celebrate their health and resilience as a testament to survival.
