Twisted triple murderer Valdo Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020, is currently incarcerated at Ashworth High Secure Hospital in Maghull, near Liverpool. Calocane, 34, was convicted of killing Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates, along with attempting to murder three others in a brutal spree on June 13, 2023.
Due to the ongoing threat he poses, Calocane has been under strict long-term segregation (LTS) at Ashworth. The facility, known for housing some of the UK’s most disturbed criminals, provides additional security measures for Calocane, including a secure room with a hatch on the door.
Constantly monitored and isolated from other patients due to his unpredictable behavior, Calocane’s living conditions under LTS are minimal, with a bare cell containing basic necessities. Visitors can only observe him through a glass screen, emphasizing the stringent safety protocols in place.
To ensure the safety of staff and fellow patients, Calocane’s interactions are strictly controlled, with limited time outside his cell and closely supervised activities. Basic amenities, such as food and medication, are passed to him through a hatch to minimize risks associated with contact.
An inquiry into Calocane’s case revealed that Nottinghamshire’s mental health trust had restricted access to records detailing his past interactions with staff. The intense security measures and careful monitoring highlight the significant risks posed by individuals like Calocane within high-security psychiatric facilities.
