“UK Air Traffic Control Disruption Sparks Flight Delays”

Date:

Hundreds of flights in the UK faced delays due to a problem with the country’s air traffic control. The disruption stemmed from an issue at the Met Office, leading to the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) not receiving essential weather information.

Ryanair experienced delays in 155 flights, affecting nearly 30,000 passengers with delays of up to three hours. EasyJet was more severely impacted, with 253 flights delayed, constituting 13% of its scheduled departures for the day.

According to a spokesperson for NATs, a technical problem at the Met Office prevented the transmission of crucial weather data to the air traffic control systems, necessitating the imposition of air traffic restrictions that have since been lifted. Collaboration between NATs and the Met Office continues to resolve the underlying issue.

Ryanair’s Chief Operations Officer, Neal McMahon, criticized NATs for the disruption, citing a similar incident in 2023 that affected UK passengers. The 2023 incident caused significant flight delays and cancellations, impacting over 700,000 passengers.

Following an investigation into the 2023 incident, it was revealed that a technical fault triggered the disruption, which persisted until the manufacturer, Frequentis Comsoft, rectified the issue. An independent review panel highlighted the need for improvements in NATs’ operations and emphasized industry-wide cooperation to enhance passenger care in similar situations.

Rob Bishton, CEO of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, emphasized the importance of learning from past incidents to enhance the aviation sector’s resilience. The final report from the independent review panel offers recommendations for sector-wide improvements to prevent such disruptions in the future.
