“UK Braces for 85cm Snowfall & Freezing Temperatures”

Date:

A blizzard is expected to bring up to 85cm of snow, as the Met Office warns of increased chances of colder weather and wintry hazards. Britons are bracing for more wintry conditions in the upcoming weeks following the icy start to January with the arrival of Storm Goretti. Weather patterns indicate low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic, colliding with cold Arctic air, resulting in snowfall.

By early February, forecasts show a low-pressure system settling over Ireland, set to bring heavy snow across the UK. The most significant snowfall is anticipated in Scotland, potentially reaching depths of 85cm, with snow flurries expected as far south as the coast. Weather maps for February 1 at 6pm highlight dark purple snow clouds over northern England and Scotland, shifting slightly eastward by 9pm but remaining predominant over central Scotland.

Temperatures are expected to plummet, with parts of central Scotland possibly dropping to -11°C, and south Wales forecasted to reach -10°C by midday on February 2. The Met Office suggests a likelihood of temperatures dropping further, particularly in the North East.

From January 23 to February 1, the UK is expected to experience a clash between Atlantic weather systems pushing in from the west and high pressure along with colder, drier conditions from the east. Initially, milder Atlantic air will dominate most areas, bringing showers or longer periods of rain. Temperatures are likely to remain average or slightly above, except for the far northeast where colder conditions may lead to sleet or snow. The forecast indicates a rising probability of widespread colder and drier conditions, potentially increasing the chance of snow across the country.

Looking ahead to February 2-16, the Met Office anticipates continued cold conditions and wintry hazards. Weather patterns are expected to evolve slowly around the UK, with low pressure positioned to the west or southwest and high pressure to the northeast. This setup raises the likelihood of cold weather affecting the UK, with possible wintry hazards at times. Towards the end of February, there could be a shift towards more unsettled conditions and a return to temperatures closer to average levels.
