UK Braces for Cool Weekend After Heatwave

Date:

Temperatures in the UK are expected to decrease in various regions, signaling a cool start to the upcoming weekend for many residents. This shift follows a period of hot, humid weather, as confirmed by the Met Office, indicating that England and Wales are on track to experience the driest July on record.

Saturday is forecasted to begin with cooler temperatures for many areas, accompanied by plenty of sunshine in the morning. Maximum temperatures are predicted to reach 25-26C, offering a warm but less intense environment compared to recent days.

Recent reports from the Met Office highlight the exceptionally dry conditions in England and Wales this July, characterized by extreme heat, abundant sunshine, and minimal rainfall. Data shows that England received only 5.6mm of rainfall this month, significantly lower than the previous record set in 1911. Similarly, Wales recorded just 7.9mm of rainfall, marking its driest July on record.

Northern Ireland is on track for its eighth driest July, while the UK as a whole is heading towards its third driest July ever recorded. Despite these dry conditions, Scotland has received 72% of its average July rainfall and is not among the top 10 driest Julys at present.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates showery rain in the north, particularly in Scotland, while most other regions will remain dry. Although some rain is expected next week, minimal precipitation is anticipated over the weekend.

Aerial images captured on Friday reveal the parched landscape in London after weeks of scorching weather, with half of England and all of Wales officially in a state of drought due to consecutive heatwaves straining water supplies.

In Suffolk, firefighters continue to battle a blaze at Dunwich Heath near Leiston, with ongoing efforts to contain the fire. The wildfire’s proximity to the Sizewell B nuclear power station and the proposed Sizewell C construction site adds complexity to the situation.
