New weather forecasts have revealed specific areas and timings for significant snowfall of up to 70cm in the UK. After a cold start to 2026, many regions in the UK experienced a milder beginning. However, the latest weather maps indicate the possibility of substantial snowfall across the country in January, prompting the potential need for hats and gloves once again.
The WXCharts maps for January 31 demonstrate anticipated snowfall extending from the Scottish Highlands down to the south coast. Heavy snow is predicted for central Scotland, with projections indicating up to 71cm by 6pm on that day. Northern England also expects considerable snow accumulation, with up to 24cm expected in the Pennines and the border regions of Cumbria and Northumberland. The latter part of January may bring further heavy snowfall before spreading southwards.
Temperature forecasts suggest a drop to as low as -14C in central Scotland on January 30, while other parts of the country may hover just above freezing. The Met Office has highlighted a likelihood of temperatures decreasing, particularly in the North East, with a potential clash between Atlantic weather systems moving in from the west and colder conditions prevailing from the east between January 22 and 31.
As the month transitions into February, a setup of low pressure in the west or southwest and high pressure in the northeast could lead to increased chances of cold weather impacting the UK, potentially bringing wintry conditions at times. The Met Office’s long-range forecast from February 1 to February 15 emphasizes the potential for wintry hazards amidst this weather pattern.
