The Met Office has released a forecast for the upcoming three months, indicating a higher likelihood of heatwave conditions in the UK. This comes after a blazing heatwave in May, where temperatures soared to 35.1C in London’s Kew Gardens, marking the hottest May temperature on record.
Weather models are predicting a resurgence in temperatures above 30C by mid-June, with the Met Office’s long-range outlook for June, July, and August suggesting a greater chance of hot conditions this summer. While average conditions remain a possibility, forecasters emphasize the increased probability of a hot summer.
The forecast also notes that the escalating occurrence of heatwaves aligns with the ongoing trend of rising UK temperatures associated with global climate change. MeteoGroup, a provider of weather data to BBC Weather, echoes these sentiments, hinting at more heatwaves and notable temperature spikes in the coming months.
MeteoGroup’s forecast anticipates above-average temperatures throughout June, July, and August, with significant heatwaves expected in the UK and across Europe. The Met Office’s specific forecast for June 8 to June 17 mentions a chance of showers or prolonged rain, particularly in the north-west, while the south-east is likely to experience drier conditions.
As the period progresses, higher pressure systems and settled weather may become more prevalent, especially in the south, with temperatures expected to be mostly normal. Looking ahead to June 18 to July 2, the forecast indicates drier conditions at the start of the period due to high pressure, though showers are still possible. Light winds and above-normal temperatures are anticipated.
By the end of June, low pressure could influence the weather more, leading to heavy showers and thunderstorms in the south, accompanied by potentially hot conditions in some areas.
