An extreme heat warning has been expanded in the UK as a heatwave approaches, potentially reaching a record-breaking 38C in temperature. The Met Office has indicated that London may experience 38C on Wednesday and Thursday, with a high probability of breaking the June temperature record of 35.6C set in 1976 in Southampton.
The prolonged hot weather forecasted until at least Thursday has led to weather warnings, health alerts, and concerns for vulnerable individuals. The Met Office has extended an amber extreme heat warning from Monday to Thursday, particularly for central southern regions, where heat-related impacts are expected among the population throughout the week.
The alert emphasizes the potential health risks from the heat and a heightened possibility of water-related accidents. The warning covers most of southern England, central and eastern Wales, and a significant portion of the Midlands for Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, Wednesday and Thursday’s alert includes parts of Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, and Cheshire.
Residents in the warning areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and refrain from strenuous activities between 11am and 3pm. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued separate amber heat health alerts covering most of England from Monday morning to Friday night, with a yellow heat alert for north-east England during the same period.
Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey emphasized the importance of caution amidst the heatwave, highlighting the need for water safety, especially near coastal or inland water bodies. Meanwhile, Europe is also experiencing high temperatures, with Rome expecting 37C and Madrid 39C on Monday. France anticipates highs of 40C, prompting emergency services and military forces to be on wildfire alert.
The escalating frequency of extreme weather events like heatwaves, floods, and storms is attributed to the climate crisis, with record-breaking temperatures becoming more common globally. A recent Met Office report predicts a high likelihood of surpassing current temperature records, indicating the urgent need for climate action.
