Recent UK weather forecasts show a cold front approaching the country, bringing the possibility of snow covering vast distances and rare freezing rain in some areas.
While temperatures have been relatively mild lately, they are expected to drop as winter 2025/26 progresses. This shift in weather has led to more turbulent conditions, including heavy wind and rain across the country in the past week.
Weather maps indicate that the unsettled weather will persist in the early days of February 2026, potentially bringing unusual occurrences like freezing rain as temperatures dip below zero.
New data from WXCharts shows an Arctic system arriving before Valentine’s Day on February 13, likely bringing snow across 601 miles from north to south of the UK. Although the snow accumulation may be minimal, there is a higher chance of freezing rain affecting a smaller region.
The freezing rain is expected to hit southern Wales, including areas like Newport and Cardiff, with temperatures dropping to -4C. This freezing shower is forecasted to be short-lived, ending by 6 pm after producing around 0.1mm of rain per hour. However, once the rain reaches Bristol on the same day, it is expected to transition to normal rainfall without freezing.
Snow is likely to continue covering the country for several days, possibly until February 15, according to the latest maps. The Met Office’s long-range forecast for February 6 to 15 warns of incoming rain and colder temperatures.
The forecast predicts: “Frontal systems from the Atlantic, influenced by a southward jet stream, are expected to approach the UK, potentially leading to more rain, particularly in flood-prone areas.
“As these rain bands move northward, there is a chance of snow in northern England and Scotland, primarily on elevated terrain, due to colder air.”
“A shift southward of low-pressure areas is anticipated in the second week of February, increasing the likelihood of colder air spreading across various parts of the UK, including the south, posing a greater risk of wintry conditions for a period.”
Before this, wintry hazards are expected to affect the UK, with yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office for ice and rain until February 2 and 3 in the southwest, bringing potential risks of fog and slippery surfaces.
