“UK Braces for Wintry Blast: 60% Impacted by Snow and Ice”

Date:

Severe weather conditions are predicted to affect around 60% of the United Kingdom next week, according to weather maps. On Wednesday, February 25, significant portions of Scotland, Wales, northern England, and the Midlands may experience wintry weather with snow and ice. The snow-depth maps from WXCharts, utilizing MetDesk data, indicate that Atlantic weather systems moving in from the west could bring snow showers overnight into Wednesday morning, leading to widespread snow or ice by noon.

The forecast for midday shows the heaviest snowfall in Scotland, potentially impacting cities like Aberdeen, Dundee, and Glasgow. In England, lighter snow showers are expected in Newcastle upon Tyne and Manchester, while Stoke-on-Trent could see scattered snowfall. Northern Ireland, including Belfast, might also see some wintry showers with the possibility of light snow, although less intense compared to Scotland.

By 3pm, snow is projected to persist in Scotland, particularly in higher elevations around Aberdeen and Dundee. Northern England, especially over the Pennines, could experience lighter, patchy snow showers, possibly transitioning to rain in some areas. The southern regions are likely to remain dry without any snowfall.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast from February 23 to March 4 describes the period as “quite changeable” due to Atlantic frontal systems affecting the UK. These systems are anticipated to bring bouts of rain or showers, more concentrated in western areas, interspersed with drier intervals. The forecast also mentions the possibility of strong winds, especially in western regions, with temperatures expected to be near or slightly above average, although a slight cooling trend may occur around the month’s end.

Looking ahead to Friday to Sunday, the Met Office expects overnight frost to clear on Friday, followed by wet and windy conditions shifting eastward, leading to brighter skies with showers later on. The weekend is forecasted to be milder but with occasional wet and windy weather.

Tomorrow’s weather outlook suggests drier and calmer conditions for most regions, with precipitation easing in the south and becoming limited to eastern England. However, some isolated showers could persist in the western areas.

Several weather warnings are currently in place, including a yellow snow warning for parts of Wales, central England, and the southern Pennines until Thursday morning, along with an ice warning for Wales and the West Midlands until 10am. Additionally, a rain warning is active for parts of South West England and London & South East England until 8am. No weather warnings are issued for Friday at present.
