The appearance of Orca whales and dolphins along the UK coastline is significantly boosting tourism and ‘staycation’ holidays. Tour operators have confirmed multiple sightings of Orcas near the Farne Islands off Northumberland this year, with the latest sighting occurring during a busy public holiday. This increase in sightings is attributed to a ban on fishing for sand eels in the area, leading to more food for Orcas, dolphins, and porpoises.
Andrew Douglas, the owner of Serenity Farne Island Boat Tours, expressed excitement over the frequent sightings of marine mammals, emphasizing the positive impact of the fishing ban on the local ecosystem. He mentioned that the ban has attracted various marine species back to the area, thus enhancing the chances of spotting Orcas and other creatures feeding in the waters.
According to Douglas, the current whale and dolphin watching experience is the best he has encountered in his three decades of operating boat tours along the North East coast. His tours, operating daily depending on weather conditions, have witnessed an increase in marine life activities.
In a related development last year, researchers identified a group of ‘Geordie’ dolphins off the Northumberland coast. These dolphins, previously believed to be transient, are now considered residents following research on their distinct whistling sounds. The use of hydrophones along the North East coast has helped experts track the movements and behaviors of these dolphins.
The positive sightings of Orcas, along with the resident dolphin population, have created a buzz among tourists and locals alike. The North East Cetacean Project’s coordinator, Martin Kitching, noted the changing distribution patterns of killer whales in the Northumberland coastal area, possibly indicating multiple groups of Orcas from different regions frequenting the area.
The increasing presence of these majestic marine creatures is not only a delight for nature enthusiasts but also contributes to the region’s tourism industry. The unique opportunity to witness such diverse marine life up close is drawing attention and interest from visitors, making the coastal area a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
