“UK Current Accounts Miss Out on Billions in Interest”

Date:

Many individuals tend to keep funds in their current accounts for emergency needs, a common practice. However, recent studies indicate that a significant 87% of UK current accounts do not generate any interest, despite holding substantial balances.

Financial analysts caution that maintaining money in a non-interest bearing account leads to the gradual erosion of savings due to inflation’s impact on their value.

Given the Bank of England base rate at 3.75%, numerous savings accounts are now offering returns exceeding 4%, providing an opportunity to make money work more effectively.

The convenience of having quick access to funds in a current account appeals to many individuals. However, this convenience comes with a cost.

Research conducted by savings provider Spring indicates that over a million UK current accounts hold balances exceeding £50,000 without earning any interest, totaling approximately £116 billion left idle.

Even smaller amounts can be impacted.

For instance, an individual with £5,000 in a non-interest account could potentially earn about £225 annually by transferring it to a competitive easy-access savings account offering a 4.5% rate, as estimated by industry experts.

The concern extends beyond missed interest earnings.
