Keir Starmer has stated that British aircraft are currently operating in the Middle East to safeguard the nation’s citizens. This action comes in response to recent strikes on Iran conducted by the United States and Israel.
In a speech delivered at Downing Street, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for de-escalation while strongly criticizing Iran’s authoritarian government.
The US and Israeli military forces launched an attack on Iran over the weekend, describing it as a preemptive measure against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Keir Starmer clarified that the United Kingdom was not involved in these strikes but expressed severe disapproval of Iran’s oppressive regime, citing instances of human rights abuses and regional destabilization.
Highlighting the threat posed by Iran to dissidents and the Jewish community even within the UK, the Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s commitment, along with its allies like the US, to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He condemned Iran’s actions against regional partners not involved in the conflict.
The PM disclosed that the UK has enhanced its defensive capabilities in the region and confirmed the deployment of British aircraft for regional defense operations. He stressed the importance of protecting British interests and allies in accordance with international law.
Efforts have been intensified to safeguard British personnel and bases, while support is being extended to UK nationals in the region. The PM emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation and returning to diplomatic negotiations.
Earlier, the PM, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, issued a joint statement urging Iran to pursue a diplomatic resolution. This statement followed an emergency meeting chaired by the PM as missile strikes continued in the Middle East.
The recent attack on Iran follows escalating tensions in the region, with the US increasing its military presence to pressure Tehran. Talks between the US and Iran regarding Iran’s nuclear program concluded without an agreement.
Israeli authorities described the strikes, known as Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Operation Epic Fury by the US, as aimed at dismantling the Iranian regime and eliminating threats to Israel’s existence.
