“UK Food Distributor Localist Goes Into Liquidation”

Date:

A well-established food company in the UK has gone into liquidation after operating for 35 years. Enterprise Foods Limited, based in East Kilbride and known as Localist, facilitated the distribution of goods for suppliers and producers to major retailers. Unfortunately, the company faced financial challenges, leading to the redundancy of 71 employees.

The financial difficulties stemmed from the company’s inability to refinance debts exceeding £5 million, resulting in the appointment of George Lafferty of BTG as the provisional liquidator. The company’s cash-flow issues were compounded by customer failures and tough market conditions affecting the retail and hospitality sectors. This collapse signifies the end of a longstanding Scottish foodservice business and highlights the ongoing pressures within the industry.

Thomas McKay, the managing partner of BTG for Scotland and Northern Ireland, expressed support for the affected staff. Efforts were made to restructure the company’s debt to save the business and jobs, but unfortunately, job losses became unavoidable. The closure will also impact small suppliers owed money by the company.

McKay mentioned ongoing efforts to assess claims and potential dividends for unsecured creditors, although the company’s secured debts may limit payouts. The focus now is on assisting employees with financial entitlements through various support services. This situation echoes a recent event where a UK airline, Eastern Airways, went into administration after 24 years in operation due to unsustainable costs and contract terminations.
