“UK Fuel Stations Urged to Submit Pricing Data Amid Profit Allegations”

Date:

Fuel stations have been instructed to speed up the submission of crucial pricing data following allegations of excessive profit-making.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has directed numerous garages to provide updated information on fuel margins, which denotes the earnings from selling petrol and diesel. Juliette Enser, the CMA’s executive director for markets, emphasized the importance of ensuring that any price hikes are a true reflection of cost pressures. The CMA aims to closely monitor and report on fuel price movements and will address any questionable practices.

Recent figures from the RAC show that the average national price for unleaded petrol has surged to 140.15p per liter, marking an increase of over 7p since the start of recent events. Diesel prices have risen even more dramatically, climbing nearly 16p per liter to 158.23p.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, highlighted the concerns of drivers regarding the escalating cost of motoring, with fuel costs being a significant factor. He welcomed the CMA’s scrutiny of forecourt pricing nationwide.

FairFuelUK founder Howard Cox raised concerns about potential opportunistic profiteering as Energy Secretary Ed Miliband met with industry leaders to discuss the ongoing Middle East situation. Miliband reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the cost of living crisis as the price cap is set to decrease in April.

The government’s newly appointed cost of living tsar has urged for weekly emergency meetings akin to Cobra meetings to prevent households from being exploited during the Middle East turmoil. Lord Richard Walker proposed the establishment of a weekly committee of regulators during economic uncertainties to ensure fair practices.

Comparing the situation to France, where mandatory inspections at petrol stations are in place to prevent price gouging, Lord Walker questioned the rapid surge in pump prices. He called for emergency measures to guarantee fair conduct among all stakeholders.
