An attempt to evacuate 180 stranded Brits from the Middle East via a government flight faced a setback when the departure was delayed due to technical issues. The flight, scheduled to leave from Muscat, Oman, was grounded overnight but is now anticipated to depart later today, according to the Foreign Office.
Opposition leader Keir Starmer had previously committed to organizing two more government-chartered flights to rescue Brits stuck in the region in the near future. The Foreign Office is currently dealing with a significant consular crisis, with approximately 138,000 British nationals registered in the Middle East, the majority of whom are in the United Arab Emirates.
While many stranded individuals are expected to rely on commercial flights, Prime Minister Johnson informed MPs that over 1,000 British nationals had already returned from the UAE on commercial flights, with eight more flights scheduled for the following day.
The Foreign Office, in collaboration with airlines and other stakeholders, is working tirelessly to facilitate the safe return of British citizens amidst the ongoing conflict in the region. Efforts include engaging with airline officials and governments to secure additional flight options for those stranded.
The situation has led to over 4,000 calls to the department since the crisis began, with officials acknowledging the challenging and unsettling circumstances faced by British nationals in the Middle East. Foreign Office Minister Falconer stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe and swift return of citizens to the UK.
One such individual, 69-year-old Shelagh Knight from Bristol, shared her experience of being stranded in Dubai amidst the conflict. She described the fear and uncertainty she faced during her time in the region before finally being reunited with her family upon returning to the UK.
Similarly, Lee Smart and Nina Luminati, a couple from London, recounted their ordeal of being stranded in Dubai while trying to return from India. Despite the challenges, they praised the UAE government’s efforts in managing the situation and facilitating their repatriation.
The Foreign Office continues to advise British nationals in the region to adhere to safety guidelines and stay informed about the evolving situation. Efforts are ongoing to provide necessary support and assistance to those affected by the crisis.
