Parts of the United Kingdom are set to experience scorching temperatures reaching up to 34C, surpassing the heat in popular vacation spots like Santorini and Barcelona. Southern England will welcome hot and highly humid air on Monday, causing temperatures to quickly soar into the mid-30s. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow and amber heat health warnings for England in response to this heatwave.
Meteorologist Tom Morgan from the Met Office mentioned that England and Wales will enjoy abundant sunshine, leading to a rapid increase in temperatures, especially in the southeast, where it may reach the mid-30s. Additionally, tropical nights are expected on Tuesday, with temperatures remaining above 20 degrees in some regions.
While Northern Ireland and Scotland may experience rain on Monday, England and Wales are predicted to remain dry with clear skies, resulting in a warmer night compared to the previous one. Tomorrow, Barcelona and Santorini are forecasted to have lower temperatures than parts of southern England, peaking at 30C and 26C, respectively.
The East Midlands, East of England, London, and South East of England will be under an amber heat health warning from 9 am tomorrow until 9 am on Wednesday. This warning signifies potential significant impacts on health and social care services due to the high temperatures. Conversely, the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, and South West are under a yellow heat health warning during the same period.
Impacts of these warnings include a rise in fatalities, especially among vulnerable groups, increased demand on health services, and overheating in indoor environments. The Met Office’s forecast for Monday indicates rain in Scotland, scattered showers in Northern Ireland and western areas, and hot sunshine in most of England and Wales with high humidity. The government recently declared half of England to be in drought, including regions such as East Anglia, London, and Wales.
