“UK Imposes Sanctions on Russian Chemical Weapons Developers”

Date:

Britain has imposed significant sanctions on nine Russian individuals and entities accused of developing chemical weapons to harm opposition figure Alexei Navalny and targeting former spy Sergei Skripal.

The UK Foreign Office officials revealed the sanctions against seven individuals and two scientific organizations responsible for creating the toxic substances that harmed Navalny and were used in the 2018 attack on Skripal. The 2018 Novichok incident in Salisbury resulted in severe illnesses for Skripal and his daughter, as well as the tragic death of Dawn Sturgess.

Navalny, who succumbed to a lethal toxin called epibatidine in a Siberian prison two years ago, had previously been poisoned with a substance akin to Novichok, the same agent that led to Sturgess’ death and Navalny’s hospitalization during a flight.

After being taken out of Russia for treatment in Europe and subsequently returning to Russia where he was arrested and sentenced to 19 years in prison, Navalny became a key figure in the international arena. The Salisbury Novichok attackers, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, are subjects of a European Arrest Warrant and suspected members of Russian military intelligence.

These actions, believed to be personally ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, have led to the latest UK sanctions targeting Russian individuals and organizations, resulting in asset freezes and travel bans. The sanctions extend to seven individuals and two research institutes responsible for the development of chemical weapons.

The Foreign Secretary emphasized that Russia’s repeated use of chemical weapons violates international law and poses a direct threat to global security. The UK, in collaboration with allies, aims to hold those responsible for such actions accountable and prevent future use of dangerous chemical weapons.

The current sanctions come amidst escalating tensions between Russia and NATO, urging the UK to confront Kremlin aggression. Key individuals sanctioned include Vladimir Kondratyev, Andrei Antokhin, and Viktor Taranchenko, who were involved in the research and testing of the toxic substances.

With over 3,400 individuals and entities sanctioned in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the UK remains committed to exposing and combatting hostile activities carried out by Russia. Noteworthy figures among those sanctioned include Artur Zhirov, Andrei Antokhin, Sergeir Chepur, Vladimir Kondratyev, Aleksandr Mahlay, Ivan Kravstov, and Viktor Taranchenko.
