The UK Foreign Office has issued a crucial warning to British travelers heading to Spain and Portugal as severe weather conditions are expected in the upcoming weeks. State meteorological agencies have issued red alerts for both countries, with Spain’s Malaga Province facing potentially dangerous rainstorms, prompting the closure of schools in Andalucia.
The red alert signifies an “extraordinary danger” in the Ronda region, with rainfall predictions exceeding 150 litres per square meter within 12 hours and possibly surpassing 200 litres within 24 hours in inland areas. The storm conditions are anticipated to persist until mid-February, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong coastal winds expected.
Travelers are advised to stay informed of weather updates, follow local authorities’ advice, and be prepared for potential disruptions in infrastructure and services. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office emphasizes that assistance may be limited during severe weather events, urging travelers to prioritize safety and security.
Storm Leonardo is expected to impact Andalusia, particularly targeting Malaga, with intense rain forecasted across the region. The meteorological agency has issued warnings for significant rainfall accumulations in various areas, prompting the activation of red advisories for Cádiz and parts of Málaga province.
As a precautionary measure, all schools in Andalusia will be closed on Wednesday, and additional alerts have been issued as the regions brace for the storm. With Storm Leonardo approaching, Portugal and Spain are preparing for further downpours, with Andalusia expected to face particularly severe rainfall, according to meteorologists.
