A man from the UK is potentially facing the death penalty for allegedly shooting his wife in the face while they were at a hotel. The accused, Anthony James Condron, 56, reportedly used a 9mm handgun to shoot Pattanee Urapanom, 43, at the resort where they were staying before leaving the scene the following morning. The tragic incident occurred at the Janpanom Farm Stay in Maha Sarakham, Thailand, around 11am local time.
Condron, hailing from Witham, Essex, was discovered smoking on a hotel balcony in a neighboring province, Khon Kaen, approximately 80 miles away. He had purportedly planned to escape to the coastal town of Pattaya but was apprehended by armed police after they surrounded the building and negotiated his surrender.
After being taken to the Khon Kaen Police Station, Condron reportedly informed authorities that he had shot his wife because she had disregarded him while he was feeling unwell. He was later moved to the Don Wan Police Station in Maha Sarakham province, the alleged location of the murder.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated, “We are liaising with local authorities after the detention of a British man in Thailand.” Video footage captured Condron being escorted into a police vehicle in handcuffs, with reporters questioning his remorse for the act.
During a police interrogation, Condron claimed that the shooting was accidental, resulting from a struggle over the firearm that led to it discharging twice. Police Lieutenant Colonel Katta Phudoungjit from the Don Wan Police Station mentioned that a witness, a relative of the victim who was standing close during the shooting, saw the gun being fired.
The suspect is facing charges of intentional murder and illegal possession of a firearm under the Firearms Act. He denied ownership of the firearm, stating that he is a foreigner and questioning why he would possess a gun. Condron emphasized that his wife failed to care for him during his illness, mentioning his use of anti-anxiety medication and history of panic attacks.
Authorities revealed that Condron and Ms. Pattanee had been in a dispute before the alleged shooting, which occurred as she was getting onto a motorcycle to leave their shared residence. Locals mentioned that Condron, who had resided in Thailand for over a decade, had a reputation for drug use and violent behavior, while his wife was respected in the community for her volunteer work at local schools and charities.
Following Thai law, Condron could face a sentence ranging from 20 years in prison to the death penalty if convicted of murder, depending on the circumstances and evidence presented in court.
