In a recent revelation, data gathered by Confused.com through Freedom of Information requests has unveiled the top-paying regions for pothole compensation claims. Over the period between 2022 and 2025, UK councils faced a staggering 144,230 claims for pothole damage, resulting in a payout exceeding £11 million, with £1.1 million disbursed in 2025 alone. During this time frame, a total of 3.4 million potholes were reported nationwide, with a notable 18% surge in reports in 2025.
Despite the substantial claims, there has been a sharp decline in successful compensation awards. In 2025, only 19% of claims were approved, down from 29% the previous year. Among the areas heavily affected, Devon stood out with the highest number of reported potholes at 210,754, yet only 15% of damage claims were accepted. Similarly, West Yorkshire, Northumberland, and Greater London faced significant pothole challenges, with varying success rates in claim approvals.
Greater London emerged as the top region for total claims payouts, with drivers receiving £1,294,566 in compensation over the four-year period. This was followed by East Sussex, Glasgow, Highland Council, and Oxfordshire in terms of total compensation awards. In 2025 alone, UK councils managed to repair a substantial 990,840 potholes, with Greater London, West Yorkshire, and Devon leading the efforts in pothole repairs.
A recent survey of 2,000 motorists indicated that over half of drivers perceive road conditions to have worsened compared to previous years, with a significant percentage encountering potholes daily or multiple times a week. However, the process of recovering costs from pothole damage remains challenging for many drivers, with complexities in the council claims process highlighted as a barrier.
To assist drivers, Confused.com has introduced a user-friendly pothole reporting tool that provides insights from local councils on pothole reports, repairs, and compensation claims. This tool aims to streamline the reporting process and facilitate prompt action by the relevant authorities.
