Keir Starmer is scheduled to host an urgent press briefing at 10 Downing Street today following the recent turmoil caused by Donald Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs due to his Greenland ambitions. NATO nations, including the UK, have cautioned the US President that his actions could lead to a detrimental deterioration in diplomatic relations. In a collective statement, these countries expressed their commitment to stand together in support of Denmark and Greenland.
The unpredictable US President has issued a warning of imposing 10% tariffs on certain countries, including the UK, for opposing his aspirations to acquire Greenland. Additionally, he has threatened to raise tariffs on NATO allies to 25% by June 1 if an agreement regarding the Greenland purchase is not reached promptly.
Over the weekend, Keir Starmer publicly criticized Trump’s actions as “entirely misguided,” diverging from his usual stance of not directly addressing the US President. As a result, the Prime Minister has postponed a planned speech focusing on cost of living issues in the North West.
Instead, Starmer is anticipated to discuss the recent international developments at a press conference from Downing Street today. He aims to outline the UK’s strategy for collaborating with allies while emphasizing the protection of British citizens’ security and living standards.
A joint statement released on Sunday by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK affirmed their commitment to enhancing Arctic security as a common transatlantic interest. They asserted their solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Despite Trump’s threats, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized the UK’s unwavering stance on Greenland’s future, stating that it hinges on the desires of the Greenlandic and Danish populations. Nandy stressed that the UK will not engage in a verbal confrontation with the US and escalate tensions. She also dismissed the notion of delaying King Charles’s US state visit in response to the current situation.
In an effort to address the escalating situation, EU ambassadors were summoned for urgent discussions regarding the threats made by President Trump.
