A UK-based private jet company has coordinated over 70 rescue flights from the Middle East since the beginning of the US-Iran conflict, with more scheduled to depart in the near future.
Air Charter Service has been actively involved in the evacuation efforts since the conflict erupted 13 days ago. This has led to a significant number of British citizens, totaling more than 168,000 individuals, registering their presence in the Middle East with the UK Foreign Office, which has established a crisis center. The majority of these individuals are located in the United Arab Emirates.
The company’s Chairman, Chris Leach, stated that initially, most charter flights were focused on swiftly evacuating individuals from the immediate vicinity via private jets. Identifying Muscat and Riyadh as optimal airports for evacuations due to the open airspace in Oman and Saudi Arabia, the company stationed a team in Muscat to ensure smooth operations.
In the initial days, over 20 private jets were arranged from Muscat, with Istanbul being a popular destination for onward connections. As the crisis evolved, the emphasis shifted towards larger aircraft, catering to groups departing the region, particularly for multinational corporations and governments.
The ongoing conflict has triggered a significant consular crisis, with experts comparing it to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Foreign Office minister, Hamish Falconer, highlighted the relentless efforts being made to assist stranded British nationals.
Amidst the turmoil, families have resorted to private jets and evacuation flights organized by the UK government to flee the conflict zone. Notable individuals, like Samuel Leeds, chartered a private jet to evacuate from the UAE, drawing mixed reactions.
Chris Leach, born at Stansted Airport, founded Air Charter Service in 1990, which has now grown to become one of the largest charter brokers globally, employing over 500 staff. The sudden outbreak of the conflict prompted an emergency response plan, with a focus on evacuating the company’s staff from the region swiftly.
Describing the extensive rescue efforts, Chris mentioned organizing a dedicated flight from Muscat to Athens, opening up further evacuation options as UAE airspace resumed operations. The company’s collective efforts in arranging numerous charters have been commendable, with a commitment to aiding affected individuals amid the crisis.
As the situation unfolds, the hope remains for a swift resolution to the hostilities, acknowledging the lasting repercussions on the aviation and travel industry.
