Authorities have intercepted a shipment of small boats and engines en route from China that could have transported up to 2,000 individuals across the Channel.
The UK’s border security commander praised the operation that led to the confiscation of 25 inflatable boats and engines, describing it as a significant blow to smuggling networks. The 10-meter-long boats, capable of carrying around 80 people each on the dangerous voyage, were discovered inside a container at Felixstowe intended for Germany.
This marks the first instance of a large consignment of boats and engines being seized in the UK. The National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed that the container was destined for Hamburg, Germany, a crucial hub for human traffickers.
Subsequently, the boats would have been transported to northern France or Belgium to facilitate perilous Channel crossings. The government has committed to dismantling the smuggling rings responsible for the influx of small boats landing on British shores.
According to the NCA, together with international partners, over 1,500 boats and engines have been intercepted since 2023. The recent seizure is part of an ongoing effort to combat criminal organizations.
Border Security Commander Duncan Capps stated, “This confiscation deals a severe blow to the criminal syndicates enabling hazardous and illicit Channel crossings.
“Through the diligent work of the NCA, Home Office intelligence teams, and Border Force officers, disruptions to criminal networks and their supply chains are occurring more frequently than ever.”
He emphasized that those involved in smuggling flimsy small boat equipment will face legal consequences. NCA Branch Commander Adam Berry added, “The significant seizure of small boat equipment will heavily impact the profits of the criminal network involved.
“It has also prevented the use of these dangerous boats and underpowered engines to endanger lives in the Channel.
“Upon identifying that the shipment would pass through a UK port en route to Germany, prompt action was taken in collaboration with Border Force to halt its further transit.
“Disrupting the supply lines of people smuggling networks is one strategy in our ongoing efforts to thwart their activities. Our investigation continues.”
There is no indication that the ship’s crew or operators were aware of the container’s contents. The Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Act, passed recently, introduced new criminal offenses prohibiting the supply or handling of items linked to organized immigration crime.
