UK Teen Defies Kremlin Sanctions on Crypto Database

Date:

A teenage student from the UK has become the first minor to be sanctioned by the Kremlin, but he remains unfazed and considers it a mark of pride. Alexander Browder, a sixth form student, was among five British individuals banned from Russia for his involvement in compiling a database of illicit cryptocurrency transactions that allegedly circumvented Western sanctions.

The student’s database, which exposed Russian money laundering activities, gained international attention after its launch at the Houses of Parliament. His report, titled “Confronting the Illicit-Finance Hydra in Crypto Markets: Protecting Retail Investors and Disrupting Hostile Government Exploitation,” was released by the Henry Jackson Society think tank in March.

Despite facing sanctions from Russia’s Foreign Ministry for spreading what they deemed as false information, Alexander remains resolute. He disclosed alleged illicit cryptocurrency laundering operations totaling around $350 billion, implicating countries like Iran, North Korea, and Russia in using digital currency stablecoin to fund activities such as Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In defiance of the sanctions, Alexander expressed his indifference, stating that he views the punishment as a testament to his impactful work. He emphasized that the sanctions do not deter him and only reaffirm that his efforts are hitting the right targets. His father, Bill Browder, a former prominent foreign investor in Russia, criticized Russia’s actions, highlighting the unprecedented nature of sanctioning a high school student.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry defended its decision to sanction Alexander, warning against any attempts by British political elites to escalate anti-Russian sentiments. The Ministry labeled the imposed sanctions as a response to Alexander’s dissemination of false information about Russian policies.
