“UK Tourists Cancel Cyprus Vacations Amid Rising Tensions”

Date:

Britons are calling off their vacations to Cyprus amidst increased military activities surrounding the island, despite assurances from locals and politicians that the destination remains secure.

Despite no official Foreign Office warning against traveling to Cyprus, recent attacks have brought the European country close to conflict, second only to Turkey.

The UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, announced the deployment of the Type 45 Destroyer to the Mediterranean region following a drone incident at RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus on March 1, causing minimal damage as per the Ministry of Defence.

Subsequent drone activity on March 2 caused slight damage to a hangar at the air base, with no casualties reported. British Typhoon and F-35 warplanes intercepted two more drones later that day.

While no further incidents have occurred since then, local businesses have noted a sense of unease among tourists, leading to some holiday cancellations. Business owner Vassilis Georgiou mentioned that travelers are reevaluating their plans due to the ongoing situation.

Nick Aristou, who owns multiple hotels in Cyprus, shared that most cancellations, approximately 90%, are for March, with a smaller percentage affecting April bookings.

However, Agia Napa Municipal Secretary Fotos Kikillos downplayed the cancellations, emphasizing the safety and enjoyment of visitors in Cyprus amidst the current climate.

Julia Lo Bue-Said, representing UK travel agents, stated that initial concerns have subsided, with travelers showing comfort in proceeding with their Cyprus travel plans. She noted a shift in inquiries towards destinations like Spain, Greece, and Portugal.

Cyprus’s foreign minister, Constantinos Kombos, urged tourists not to cancel their trips, highlighting the normalcy of operations in the country despite recent events.

In a show of solidarity, French President Emmanuel Macron pledged additional support to Cyprus, dispatching more warships to the Eastern Mediterranean to enhance regional security amid tensions related to the Iran conflict.

The UK Ministry of Defence announced the deployment of HMS Dragon to Cyprus, intensifying efforts to safeguard the region following the recent drone attacks.

Travelers planning trips to Cyprus are advised to refer to the latest travel guidance provided by the FCDO for updated information.
