“UK Train Services Disrupted by Third Heatwave”

Date:

Due to the forecasted third heatwave in the UK in as many months, certain train services will be affected this week with cancellations and reduced speeds to combat temperatures potentially exceeding 35C.

The Met Office has advised customers to consider essential travel only, as temperatures are anticipated to reach the mid-30s in various regions.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) has recommended that passengers aim to travel before noon to avoid peak heat, anticipate service disruptions, and verify timetable adjustments prior to their journey.

EMR disclosed that specific regional routes, such as those between Nottingham and Worksop, and Nottingham and Leicester, will be halted from midday on Wednesday to mitigate the impact of extreme temperatures on rail operations.

In addition, EMR noted that some services will operate at reduced speeds as a precautionary measure for safety during the heatwave period.

The elevated temperatures pose risks such as rail buckling, sagging electric wires, and fires along the tracks, with temperatures exceeding 50C on steel rails when the air temperature hits 30C.

Philippa Cresswell, the customer experience director at EMR, emphasized the necessity of temporary service alterations to ensure the safety of rail operations during the hot weather conditions.

For essential travel, EMR advised passengers to plan their journeys before midday and stay informed about any changes before commencing their trips, acknowledging the inconvenience these adjustments may cause and expressing gratitude for customers’ patience and understanding.

EMR indicated that plans for Thursday and Friday are pending review, urging customers intending to travel on those days to stay updated with the latest information before departure.
