Ukraine is introducing autonomous combat robots to replace human troops on the battlefield. President Zelensky’s arsenal now includes unmanned ground vehicles armed with Kalashnikov machine guns, grenade launchers, and kamikaze explosives, which have successfully thwarted Russian attacks and captured enemy soldiers.
According to Oleksandr Afanasiev from the Ukrainian army’s K2 brigade, these robot warriors are actively engaging in combat scenarios where human soldiers might hesitate. Unlike drones that emit warning sounds, these unmanned vehicles operate silently, catching the enemy off guard. However, despite their capabilities, human operators are still needed to make critical decisions, as robots can make errors in identifying targets.
In addition to engaging in combat, these autonomous robots can also assist in laying landmines, setting up barriers, supplying resources, and evacuating the injured. This strategic shift in military tactics comes as Ukraine faces significant manpower shortages. Russia is also advancing its combat robot technology, signaling a potential shift towards robotic warfare on both sides.
Yuriy Poritsky, the CEO of a Ukrainian autonomous robot manufacturer, envisions a future where these machines will engage in direct confrontations on the battlefield. The company aims to program these robots to function autonomously for various tasks in the near future.
The conflict in Ukraine has evolved into a high-tech battle since Russia’s invasion, with drones and unmanned vessels playing significant roles in the warfare. Tragically, a recent Russian airstrike in Kharkiv resulted in the loss of several lives, including children, and caused extensive damage to residential buildings.
The aftermath of the strike led to widespread air alerts across Ukraine, with neighboring countries like Poland reinforcing their airspace security. In Kharkiv, casualties included a 65-year-old woman, a 40-year-old man, and a 13-year-old girl, with additional fatalities reported later. Multiple buildings and infrastructure were severely affected by the attack.
